The Franklin Police Department conducted its first sobriety checkpoint this year at one that is dedicated to a family involved in a deadly drunk driving accident back in 1971. Photos of the couple's daughters and nephew were posted at the checkpoint, about a half-mile where the accident took place. The checkpoint is at Murfreesboro Road near Clovercoft Road.
The family's lives were changed forever all those years ago. A man and his wife, who was seven months pregnant, were driving with their 4-year-old daughter and a young nephew in the car. They were hit by a drunk driver, resulting in a horrific accident.
The couple's young daughter and the nephew were killed. The woman ultimately gave birth to a premature baby, who was born legally blind. And the mother herself sustained awful injuries, including a broken neck and burns over 70 percent of her body. She was knocked unconscious and doesn't remember what happened. Her husband, however, was not knocked out and attempted to save his family by fighting flames with his bare hands. He also sustained severe burns.
The woman went on to be the national president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and even sought Bill Clinton's help in getting the drunk driving limit lowered from .10 to .08. The change took effect back in 2000.
The woman worked alongside a Franklin police officer to establish the dedication to her family. According to the Tennessean, she says she wants her daughter to know that she "did everything in [her] power to keep it from happening to somebody else."
