The driver who was convicted of striking and killing two people with his vehicle while he was driving drunk received two eight-year sentences in a Nashville court this week. He pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide. He won't be serving all that time in prison, however.

The man was apparently intoxicated after having drinks at a Hendersonville sports bar one night in October 2010. He was driving in his pickup truck when he struck a 21-year-old woman and her 26-year-old boyfriend. They were both killed in the accident.

The victims' families have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver, as well as the driver's brother and the sports bar that served him alcohol. They say the man's sentence was too light.

According to News Channel 5's website, the man's first sentence is to be served in prison with a 30 percent service before he is eligible for parole. The second sentence, however, will be on parole. At that point, he will be required to wear a SKRAM bracelet that monitors the intake of alcohol.

In addition, he will be unable to drive for 10 years, as his driver's license will be taken away. And in an interesting stipulation, he must go back to jail for a week on the anniversary of the crash, as well as another week on each of the victim's birthdays.

The victims' families say they believe the punishment should have been more severe. They had hoped the driver would have to serve the full 16 years in prison without the possibility of parole.
